"But the real issue here is not Newsom – it is how the case of California raises the question of what an economy is for."

Despite what we’re taught California was bastion of lower case “d” democracy until the 1970s, it was the last state standing to seriously and resist with substantial success the post ww2 transformations, jacksonianism was written into its dna at birth. Some refer to its resistance to welfare and it being the lowest there and it resisting well after others, what most dont know, and this fully showable, that was part of a broader program, it was an engine part in an engine, an organ in a body, it fit with and was co-working with and was co-dependent a broader lower case “d” democratic program of a particularly American design, form, and style

When it booted up the things your talking about (very ironically, darkly ironically in a way, it was capable of doing so by be the last great resisting state, it by hook and crook held onto to it scientific and economic bases, and the San Jose area, which again, believe it or not, had been a citadel of lower case "d" democracy for hundreds of years, used the old lower case "d" democratic methods, which required no outside help or extra territorial advantages to *make it*, to do the original pivot to semi conductors which got the ball rolling

but that late 20th early 20th century (and now) version, has achieved its spectacular success through very anti democratic means. National and Global centralization, de-democratizations and the vastest in territorial scale economic and governmental-policy override and central planning regime the world has ever known. Its been the dark side, and at least relative to what could have been (deliberately redundant, horizontally coordinated, legal/regulatory variable and policy variable both to the local level, etc; in short, the old and traditional western-West's ways of rolling out great new tech, well, the internet not only never lived up to its original promise, there is also a large chance it has caused great civilizational harm
